Bosch Dishwasher E24 Error Code: 6 Causes & Fixes (2026)

bosch dishwasher repair aurora close up bosch appliance applianceforever ca

3-second answer: E24 on a Bosch dishwasher is a drainage fault — the machine senses water remaining at end of cycle and aborts. In about 80% of cases it’s a clogged filter, a kinked drain hose, or a blocked sink connection. Most E24s resolve in 15 minutes without pulling the dishwasher out.

This guide covers what E24 means, the six causes our technicians find in the field, a 5-step DIY fix, the reset procedure, E24 vs E25, and the model lines affected (including Kenmore Elite K-Series, which are Bosch-built). For deeper diagnostic help, see how our Bosch appliance specialists handle stubborn cases.

What does E24 mean on a Bosch dishwasher?

The E24 fault code signals a drainage error — water is not leaving the tub at the rate the control board expects. Bosch monitors drainage using two signals: a float switch in the base, and current draw on the drain pump motor. When the cycle ends and the board still detects water, it aborts and shows E24.

It’s a protective code — Bosch designed it specifically to prevent dirty wash water from sitting in the sump and creating mold or odor within 24 to 72 hours.

One detail most online guides miss: on most Bosch models the control board runs the heat pump before the drain pump as part of water-detection. A faulty heat pump can throw E24 even when drainage hardware is perfectly fine — covered in the FAQ below.

Top 6 causes of the Bosch dishwasher E24 fault code

Removing the filter from a Bosch dishwasher to clear an E24 drainage error

Across hundreds of Bosch dishwasher repair calls in Toronto, North York, Markham, Vaughan, and York Region, these are the six causes our technicians find — ranked by frequency.

  1. Clogged filter assembly (most common — about 40% of E24s). Food debris collects in the basket filter at the tub floor. Twist the filter counter-clockwise, lift it out, rinse under hot water, scrub with an old toothbrush, and reseat. Two minutes of work clears most E24s.
  2. Kinked, pinched, or improperly looped drain hose. Common after a recent install, sink renovation, or any time the unit’s been pulled out. The drain hose must rise to at least 18 inches above the floor (a “high-loop”) or pass through a working air gap.
  3. Drain pump impeller blocked by a foreign object. Broken glass, fruit pits, cherry stems, and paper labels off jars are the usual offenders — they get past the filter, lodge in the impeller, and stall the pump. Inspection requires removing the filter assembly and shining a flashlight into the sump.
  4. Garbage disposal knockout plug not removed during install. Affects brand-new installations only. When a dishwasher plumbs into a garbage disposal, the disposal’s internal knockout plug must be punched out — otherwise the dishwasher discharge has nowhere to go and the first run throws E24 within minutes.
  5. Clogged sink P-trap, air gap, or disposal trap. The kitchen drain itself is backed up, not the dishwasher. Test by running the kitchen sink hot water on its own for 30 seconds — if it backs up, your problem is downstream of the dishwasher and you need a plumber.
  6. Failing drain pump, heat pump, or main control board (least common — about 5%). The pump hums but won’t spin, the heat pump fails to signal water presence, or the board misreads its sensors. Diagnosis of last resort. Bosch drain pump parts (for example, 00611332 on the SHE3AR75UC/14) typically run $90 to $160 plus labour.

Anti-misinformation note: Some online guides — including iFixit — list “control board malfunction” as the primary cause of E24. According to professional appliance technicians on industry forums like Appliantology, this is wrong. Drain clogs cause the majority of E24 errors and resolve in 15 minutes. A failed control board is rare and is the diagnosis you reach after clogs, hoses, and pumps are ruled out — never the starting hypothesis. If a repair quote leads with “the control board is bad,” get a second opinion.

How to fix the Bosch dishwasher E24 error code in 5 steps

Tools needed to diagnose a Bosch dishwasher E24 error — cordless drill and screwdriver
Tools needed to diagnose a Bosch dishwasher E24 error — cordless drill and screwdriver

This is the 5-step fix our technicians walk customers through over the phone. Most E24 codes resolve at step 2 (filter cleaning) alone. Total time for the full sequence is 15 to 20 minutes. See our DIY dishwasher repair guide for general conventions if you’re new to this.

  1. Cancel and reset the dishwasher (2 minutes). Press and hold Start/Cancel (or Reset 3sec) for 3 to 5 seconds — you’ll hear the drain pump run for 30 to 60 seconds, clearing residual water. Then power-cycle at the breaker for a full 60 seconds. Short power-cycles often fail to clear the E24 flag.
  2. Clean the filter assembly (5 minutes). Open the dishwasher, remove the bottom rack, and locate the filter assembly at the tub floor — Bosch uses a twist-out two-piece design (coarse mesh basket plus fine filter). Twist counter-clockwise, lift out, rinse both pieces under hot tap water, scrub the mesh with an old toothbrush, and reseat by twisting clockwise until it locks.
  3. Check the drain hose for kinks and the high-loop (5 minutes). Pull the dishwasher forward 6 inches if you have slack on the water inlet line. Follow the corrugated drain hose to its connection at the disposal or air gap. Un-kink any tight bends. Confirm the hose rises to at least 18 inches above the floor before descending — the high-loop prevents siphon-back.
  4. Test the sink drain in isolation (3 minutes). Run the kitchen sink hot water for 30 seconds with the dishwasher off. If the sink itself drains slowly or backs up, the issue is your kitchen plumbing, not the dishwasher. Run the garbage disposal too if you have one, and clean its air gap cap.
  5. Run an empty rinse cycle to verify (5 minutes). Close the door and run a short Rinse-only program. If E24 reappears at end of cycle, repeat the filter clean. If E24 reappears within 60 seconds of starting, the issue is upstream of drainage hardware — professional diagnosis is the right next step.

How to reset a Bosch dishwasher after fixing E24

The Bosch dishwasher E24 reset is built into the control panel — no special service mode needed:

  • Press and hold Start/Cancel (or Reset 3sec) for 3 to 5 seconds.
  • Wait for the drain pump to run for 30 to 60 seconds — do not interrupt it.
  • Power off at the breaker for a full 60 seconds. Bosch boards hold residual charge; short power-cycles often fail.
  • Restore power — the display should clear back to a normal idle state.
  • Run an empty Rinse-only cycle to confirm the fix held.

If E24 returns during the empty rinse, do not keep clearing the code by power-cycling — diagnose the underlying cause instead.

Bosch dishwasher models affected by E24

The E24 drainage code is consistent across virtually every Bosch dishwasher sold in North America in the last decade. Models we most commonly service across the GTA include:

  • Bosch 100, 300, 500, and 800 Series — Bosch’s current US lineup (SHE, SHX, SHP, SHV prefixes). All use the same E24 drainage architecture.
  • Bosch Ascenta and Benchmark — entry-level and flagship lines. Identical E24 logic; identical fix.
  • Bosch Silence Plus 44, 46, and 50 dBa variants — noise-rated marketing names that map to the 300/500/800 Series internally. E24 fix is identical across all three.
  • Bosch EcoSense and Lifestyle Automatic legacy lines — older models still in service in Canadian kitchens. Same E24 code, same fix.
  • Kenmore Elite K-Series dishwashers — Sears contracted Bosch to build the K-Series chassis. Same E24 logic, same fault code. The fix in this guide applies identically.
  • Bosch SMS, SMV, and SMI European-spec models — fully-integrated variants sold in Canada through dealer channels.

For another common dishwasher fault, see our guide on the Samsung dishwasher LC code (leak detected).

E24 vs E25: how to tell them apart

One of the most common questions we get on service calls — the two codes look almost identical and live one number apart. Clean disambiguation:

  • E24 = drainage error. Water is in the tub at end-of-cycle when it should have drained. The drainage path is the suspect — filter, hose, sink, pump, or heat pump.
  • E25 = drain pump fault. The pump itself has failed, the pump cover is loose, or there’s a hardware problem inside the pump housing. Cleaning the filter does not clear E25.

Diagnostic shortcut: clean the filter and run a rinse cycle. If the code clears, it was E24 and you’ve fixed it. If the code returns immediately, you’re at pump-level repair and a professional diagnosis saves you guesswork.

When to call a Bosch dishwasher repair pro

You’ve reached the limit of safe DIY when any of these apply:

  • E24 reappears within 60 seconds of starting any cycle. Not a clog — that’s a pump, heat-pump, or control-board fault, requiring multimeter testing.
  • Standing water remains after a thorough manual filter cleaning. The drain pump has confirmed-bad symptoms.
  • You hear no pump sound at all when E24 displays. Electrical or control fault — the board isn’t sending current to the pump.
  • You’re comfortable opening the filter but not the pump housing. The right place to stop. Pump replacement requires laying the unit on its back and handling rubber seals correctly to prevent future leaks.
  • The dishwasher is under Bosch warranty and a DIY teardown risks voiding it.

Preventing the E24 error long-term

A few small habits dramatically reduce the chance of E24 returning:

  • Scrape large food debris before loading. Bosch filter assemblies are excellent — but they’re not garbage disposals.
  • Clean the filter monthly. Set a recurring calendar reminder. Two minutes a month prevents most E24 calls.
  • Run a Bosch-approved descaler every 30 cycles — Affresh or Finish Dishwasher Cleaner work well. Hard-water mineral buildup narrows the drain path over time.
  • Don’t overload the lower rack. Water needs room to circulate back down to the drain.
  • Confirm the drain hose stays high-looped after every cleaning, pull-out, or kitchen renovation — the single most-violated install detail in older GTA kitchens.

Bosch dishwasher E24 error code FAQ

What does the E24 error code mean on a Bosch dishwasher?

E24 is a drainage fault. The dishwasher detects unremoved water at the end of the cycle and aborts to prevent the wash water from sitting in the sump. The most common cause is a clogged filter — about 40% of cases — followed by a kinked drain hose or a blocked sink connection.

How do I fix E24 on my Bosch dishwasher myself?

Run the 5-step fix in this guide: cancel and reset, clean the filter assembly, check the drain hose for kinks, test the sink drain, and run an empty rinse cycle. Most E24 codes clear at step 2 alone in under 15 minutes.

Why does my Bosch dishwasher say E24 right after I start it?

E24 within 60 seconds of starting points to a drain pump, heat pump, or control board failure — not a clog. The control board never sees the pump draw current, so it throws the drainage code immediately. Service-call diagnosis.

Does opening and closing the door clear the E24 code?

Sometimes briefly — only as a temporary measure. Opening and closing the door can re-trigger the drain pump, but if the underlying drainage issue is unresolved, the code returns at the end of the next cycle. Not a fix on its own.

What’s the difference between E24 and E25 on a Bosch dishwasher?

E24 is a drainage error (water cannot leave the tub). E25 is a drain pump fault (the pump itself has failed or its cover is loose). Cleaning the filter typically clears E24 but does not clear E25.

Can a heat pump fault cause E24 even if drainage hardware is fine?

Yes — most online guides miss this. On most Bosch models the control board runs the heat pump before the drain pump as part of water-detection. A faulty heat pump can throw E24 even when the filter, hose, and pump are all clean. Technician-only diagnosis requiring multimeter testing.

Will Bosch’s Check Water warning come up before E24?

On some Bosch models, yes — Check Water appears mid-cycle when slow drainage is first detected, and E24 appears at cycle end if drainage never completed. Treat Check Water as the early indicator.

Can a clogged garbage disposal cause E24?

Yes. The dishwasher discharges into the disposal on most modern installs. Run the disposal, test the kitchen sink in isolation, and clean the air-gap cap before suspecting the dishwasher itself.

How long does it take to fix E24 yourself?

Filter cleaning: 5 to 10 minutes. Drain hose check: 10 to 15 minutes. Full diagnostic when simple fixes fail: 30 to 45 minutes. Most E24 codes resolve at the filter-cleaning step alone, in well under 15 minutes.

Does E24 affect Kenmore dishwashers too?

Yes — Kenmore Elite K-Series dishwashers are Bosch-built, share the same drainage architecture, and throw the same E24 fault code. The fix in this guide applies identically.
