Kenmore Washer F21 Error Code: Long Drain Error Fix in 5 Steps

appliance repair repair east gwillimbury top loading washing machine applianceforever ca

3-second answer: F21 on a Kenmore washer is a “Long Drain Error” — the washer is taking too long to drain water at the end of a cycle. About 80% of the time it’s a clogged drain pump (coins, bobby pins, baby socks), a kinked drain hose behind the washer, or a drain hose installed too high. Pull the washer 6 inches from the wall, check the hose path, then pop the front panel and clear the drain pump. Most owners fix F21 in under 30 minutes.

Most online guides about F21 lead with “it’s the pump motor” — which scares owners into thinking they need a $300 repair. The truth is the opposite: F21 is almost always a clog you can clear yourself in half an hour. This guide is the diagnostic flow our our Kenmore specialists walk customers through over the phone: the six real causes ranked by frequency, the five-step DIY fix, and an honest read on when the pump motor itself has failed.

What does F21 mean on a Kenmore washer?

On Kenmore front-load and high-efficiency top-load washers, F21 means “Long Drain Error.” At the end of a wash or rinse cycle, the washer expects the water level in the tub to drop within a specific time window — typically 8 to 10 minutes. The pressure sensor (sometimes called the pressure switch) monitors that drop. If the water level doesn’t fall fast enough, the control board flags F21 and stops the cycle.

In plain English: the washer is trying to drain but the water isn’t going anywhere. Almost always that’s a physical obstruction — debris in the drain pump impeller, a kinked drain hose, or a drain hose routed too high above the floor. Less commonly the pump motor has failed or the pressure switch itself is stuck.

Here’s the context most owners don’t know: Kenmore is a Sears house-brand, not an OEM. Kenmore washers are manufactured by Whirlpool, LG, or Frigidaire depending on the model. F21 specifically appears on the Whirlpool-built Kenmore 110 series — the most common Kenmore washer in Canadian homes. If your model number starts with 110, your washer is essentially a Whirlpool with a Kenmore badge, and the F21 fix is the same one Whirlpool techs use. (For other codes, see our hub on appliance error codes.)

Top 6 causes of the Kenmore F21 error

Across hundreds of Kenmore washer service calls in Toronto, North York, Markham, and across the GTA, this is how F21 causes break down. The first four are owner-fixable in under 30 minutes; the last two need a tech.

  1. Drain pump clogged with debris — about 40% of F21 codes. By far the most common cause. Coins, bobby pins, hair clips, baby socks, and small bits of fabric work their way past the inner basket and lodge in the drain pump impeller. The pump tries to spin but can’t move water past the obstruction. Solution: pop the front panel (3 screws on Kenmore 110 series), remove the pump cover, fish out the debris. Free, 20 minutes.
  2. Drain hose kinked behind the washer — about 20%. Easy to miss. When a washer gets pushed back too far against the wall, the drain hose can pinch or kink at the standpipe. Water can’t flow through a flattened hose. Solution: pull the washer 6 inches forward and look behind it. Straighten any kink. Free, 2 minutes.
  3. Drain hose installed too high — about 15%. Whirlpool’s installation spec (which applies to Kenmore 110-series) says the drain hose standpipe must be between 8 inches and 96 inches above the floor. Higher than 96 inches and water siphons back into the tub faster than the pump can clear it. F21 fires every cycle. Solution: re-route the hose to a lower standpipe, or shorten the hose run. Often $0 if it’s a routing fix.
  4. Coin trap or lint filter blocked — about 10%. Some Kenmore 110-series models (and certain Frigidaire-built 417 models) have an accessible coin trap or lint filter behind a small access door at the bottom front of the washer. If yours has one, gunk, lint, and coins collect there over time. Solution: open the access door, unscrew the filter, rinse it out under running water. Free, 5 minutes.
  5. Drain pump motor failure — about 10%. Less common but real. The pump motor either doesn’t run at all (no hum, no movement) or runs without moving water (electrical winding shorted, impeller broken off the shaft). After 7-10 years of weekly use, drain pumps wear out. Diagnosis: if the pump is clear of debris but F21 returns, the pump itself is bad. Replacement: $120-$180 for the part, plus 45 minutes of labour.
  6. Pressure switch fault — about 5%. The pressure switch (also called the water-level sensor) tells the control board how much water is in the tub. If the switch is stuck “high” — frozen on the full-tub reading — it never sees the water drop and fires F21 even when the tub is actually empty. Diagnosis is by elimination: drain system clear, pump works, but F21 persists. Switch replacement: $80-$140 for the part, 30 minutes of labour.

The cause distribution above reflects field experience from Kenmore washer repair across the GTA, not a published Sears or Whirlpool study. Most importantly: the top four causes are clogs, kinks, and routing issues — all owner-fixable. The next section is the 5-step DIY flow that resolves about 80% of F21 codes without a service call.

How to fix the Kenmore F21 code in 5 steps

Hands pulling a Kenmore washer 6 inches from the wall to inspect the drain hose for kinks
Hands pulling a Kenmore washer 6 inches from the wall to inspect the drain hose for kinks

This is the exact diagnostic and fix sequence our techs walk Kenmore owners through over the phone. Average elapsed time: 15 to 30 minutes for a clog or kink fix. You’ll need a Phillips screwdriver, a shallow towel-lined pan or baking dish (about 1-2 cups of water will spill from the pump area), and a flashlight.

  1. Press Power to cancel the cycle (30 seconds). Press Power/Cancel on the control panel to stop the current cycle. If the washer is full of water, leave it alone for now — you’ll drain it manually in Step 4 if needed. Pressing Cancel clears the F21 code from the display temporarily, but if the drain system is still blocked it will return within minutes of restarting.
  2. Pull the washer 6 inches from the wall and inspect the drain hose (5 min). Carefully walk or scoot the washer out from the wall (front-loaders are heavy — go slow). Look at the back of the washer where the drain hose exits and follow it to the standpipe (the upright drain pipe in your laundry wall or sink). Check for: kinks, pinch points where the hose meets the wall, hose pressed against the back of the dryer or another appliance, and any visible blockage. Straighten any kink you find. About 20% of F21 codes resolve right here.
  3. Verify the drain hose height is 8 to 96 inches above the floor (2 min). Measure from the floor to where the drain hose tops out at the standpipe. Whirlpool’s spec for Kenmore 110-series is a minimum of 8 inches (so water doesn’t siphon out during the wash cycle) and a maximum of 96 inches (so the pump can actually push water uphill). If your hose runs higher than 96 inches — common in basement laundry rooms with high standpipes — you need to re-route to a lower drain. Another 15% of F21 codes resolve here.
  4. Pop the front panel and clear the drain pump (15 min). This is where 40% of F21 codes get fixed. Unplug the washer first. On the Kenmore 110-series front-loader, there are three Phillips screws holding the front service panel: two at the bottom front corners (just above the levelling feet) and one inside the detergent dispenser drawer cavity (pull the drawer out fully and look up). Remove all three screws, then tilt the panel forward at the bottom and lift up to release the top clips. The drain pump is on the lower left — a black plastic housing with a hose going in one side and another coming out. Some models have a small access cap on the front of the pump (twist counter-clockwise to remove); others require removing the entire pump cover (4 screws). Have your towel and pan ready — water will spill. Inside the pump impeller area, look for coins, hair pins, fabric scraps, anything blocking the impeller. Remove all debris. Spin the impeller by hand to confirm it turns freely. Replace the cover, plug the washer back in.
  5. Run a Drain & Spin cycle to verify F21 clears (12 min). With the washer empty (or with the water you left in from Step 1), select Drain & Spin (sometimes labelled “Rinse & Spin” depending on Kenmore model year). Press Start. Watch what happens. If the washer drains within 8 minutes and the cycle completes without F21, you’re done — go put your laundry back in. If F21 returns within 10 minutes, you’ve ruled out causes #1-#4 and the problem is either the pump motor (cause #5) or the pressure switch (cause #6). Stop and call a tech.

If Steps 1-4 cleared F21 — great, you’ve saved a service call. If Step 5 confirmed the code returns on an empty drain system, you’ve already saved your tech 20 minutes of diagnosis. Book us online at book Kenmore repair online or call 647-834-4646.

How to reset the F21 code on a Kenmore washer

“Reset” is what most owners search when F21 appears, so let’s be precise. Kenmore washers don’t have a dedicated reset button. There are two legitimate ways to clear the code:

  • Soft reset (clears a one-off F21). Press Power/Cancel to stop the cycle. Wait 60 seconds. Press Power again. Select Drain & Spin and press Start. If the drain system isn’t actually blocked — say a momentary debris event cleared itself — the soft reset will let the next cycle complete normally.
  • Hard reset (forces a control board reboot). Unplug the washer at the wall, or flip the breaker dedicated to your laundry circuit. Wait 5 to 10 full minutes — the longer the better, since the control board capacitors hold residual charge. Plug back in. The display should return to default. Run a Drain & Spin.

Here’s the honest part: resets do not fix F21 if the underlying drain blockage is still there. The code is the washer correctly reporting a real problem with water flow. If F21 returns on the next Drain & Spin, no number of resets will fix it. You need to physically clear the drain system using the steps above. Our our Kenmore specialists can diagnose persistent F21 in a 30-minute on-site visit.

Kenmore washer models affected by F21

F21 specifically appears on Whirlpool-manufactured Kenmore washers. Here’s the model-prefix breakdown most owners aren’t aware of:

  • Kenmore 110-series (built by Whirlpool) — F21 applies here. The 110.xxxxxxx model prefix indicates a Sears washer manufactured by Whirlpool, sold under the Kenmore brand. These washers share Whirlpool’s control architecture, error code system, and most internal parts. The full Whirlpool F21 fault definition (“Long Drain Error”) applies identically. About 70% of Kenmore washers in Canadian homes are 110-series. Common 110 sub-families with F21: Kenmore Elite HE3, HE4, HE5, Oasis, and the various 110.4xxxxx front-loaders from 2005-2018.
  • Kenmore 796-series (built by LG) — does NOT show F21. The 796.xxxxxxx model prefix indicates a Kenmore washer manufactured by LG. These washers use LG’s error code system entirely — codes like OE (drain error, LG’s equivalent of F21), LE, UE, and others. If your model number starts with 796 and you’re seeing what you think is “F21,” double-check — it’s more likely OE or O.E. (the letter O, not the digit 0). See our LG washer LE code guide for the LG-built side.
  • Kenmore 417-series (built by Frigidaire) — uses different codes. The 417.xxxxxxx model prefix indicates a Kenmore washer manufactured by Frigidaire. These use Frigidaire’s E-prefix error codes (E11, E20, E21, etc.). Frigidaire’s drain-error code is E20 or E21, not F21. Different OEM, different code system.
  • Older Kenmore Elite top-load HE washers (2007-2014). Some Whirlpool-built Kenmore Elite top-loaders display F21 in the same Long Drain context, though the access for drain-pump cleaning is different (the pump is accessed from the back panel, not the front). If you have an Elite Oasis HE top-loader, F21 still means drain blockage — but call a tech if you’re not comfortable removing the back panel.

The Whirlpool-built Kenmore and Whirlpool-branded appliances share error code architecture across the entire model line. If you own a Whirlpool washer or are considering one, the same F21 fix flow will apply.

Is the F21 code serious?

F21 is a protective shutdown, not a destructive failure. The washer is doing exactly what it should — stopping the cycle before it sits there for an hour trying to drain through a blocked hose. F21 itself doesn’t damage the washer.

That said, ignoring F21 for weeks does have consequences. The drain pump motor is rated for short bursts; if it runs continuously trying to push water past a blockage, the windings can overheat and burn out. We’ve seen Kenmore pumps that started as a $0 sock-in-the-impeller fix turn into a $180 pump replacement because the owner kept restarting cycles for two weeks. Causes #1-#4 are easy fixes; causes #5-#6 are tech work but not catastrophic. The longer you ignore F21, the higher the chance cause #1 turns into cause #5.

Cleared the drain system and F21 still returns? That’s the signal the pump motor or pressure switch has failed. Same-day GTA Kenmore washer service across Toronto, North York, Markham, Vaughan, Bradford, and York Region.

When to call a Kenmore washer repair pro

Call us when any of these signals are present — at that point at-home diagnostic has done all it can:

  • F21 returns after a thorough drain-system clean — you’ve cleared the pump, straightened the hose, verified the hose height, and the code still fires within 10 minutes of Drain & Spin.
  • The drain pump doesn’t hum or run at all when the washer tries to drain — likely pump motor failure.
  • The pump runs but no water moves — impeller broken off the shaft, or pump windings shorted.
  • You can hear the pump straining (loud grinding or buzzing) but can’t access it safely — call us, don’t force the front panel.
  • The washer is leaking from the front or bottom alongside F21 — possibly a cracked pump housing that needs replacement, not just cleaning.
  • You’re not comfortable removing the front panel on the Kenmore 110-series — fair enough. A tech can do Steps 4-5 in 45 minutes. Toronto Kenmore washer repair, North York washer service, Markham washing machine repair, and Bradford-area coverage.

Our Kenmore-trained techs carry common Whirlpool/Kenmore drain pumps (which fit the 110-series) and pressure switches on the truck for same-day repairs. We work on all major brands — see all our appliance services. $89 service-call, waived if you approve the repair on the spot. 90-day warranty on parts and labour.

Preventing F21 long-term

Four habits that keep F21 from coming back:

  • Check pockets before every wash. Coins, bobby pins, and hair clips are the #1 cause of drain pump clogs. Two seconds of pocket-checking prevents a 30-minute repair.
  • Use a mesh laundry bag for small items. Baby socks, bras with underwire, and tiny garments slip past the inner basket and lodge in the pump. Mesh bags keep them contained.
  • Don’t push the washer flush against the wall. Leave 2-3 inches of clearance so the drain hose doesn’t pinch behind the unit. Most kinks happen because the washer was shoved back too far.
  • Run a hot empty Tub Clean cycle monthly. Clears soap scum, mineral buildup, and lint from the drain path before it accumulates into a partial blockage that triggers F21.

Kenmore washer F21 error code FAQ

What does F21 mean on a Kenmore washer?

F21 stands for “Long Drain Error” on Whirlpool-built Kenmore 110-series washers. The washer expects water to drain from the tub within 8 to 10 minutes at the end of a wash or rinse cycle. If the pressure sensor doesn’t see the water level drop fast enough, the control board flags F21 and stops the cycle. About 80% of F21 codes are a physical blockage — a clogged drain pump, a kinked drain hose, a hose installed too high, or a blocked coin trap — all owner-fixable in under 30 minutes.

How do I clear the F21 code on my Kenmore washer?

Two ways. Soft reset: press Power/Cancel, wait 60 seconds, press Power again, run Drain & Spin. Hard reset: unplug the washer for 5 to 10 minutes so the control board fully discharges, then plug back in. Important: resets do not fix F21 if the drain system is actually blocked. The code is the washer correctly reporting that water isn’t flowing out. You need to physically clear the drain path using the 5-step DIY fix.

Why does my Kenmore washer keep showing F21 every cycle?

Almost always a drain blockage that hasn’t been cleared. The most common scenarios: a coin or bobby pin is jammed in the drain pump impeller, the drain hose is kinked behind the washer, or the hose runs higher than 96 inches above the floor and water siphons back. Pull the washer 6 inches from the wall, follow the drain hose to the standpipe, then pop the front panel and inspect the drain pump for debris. If F21 still returns after a full clean, the pump motor or pressure switch has failed and needs a tech.

How do I clean the drain pump on a Kenmore 110-series washer?

Unplug the washer first. Three Phillips screws hold the front service panel: two at the bottom front corners (above the levelling feet) and one inside the detergent dispenser drawer cavity. Remove all three, tilt the panel forward, lift to release the top clips. The drain pump is on the lower left. Have a towel-lined pan ready — 1 to 2 cups of water will spill. Remove the pump access cap (twist counter-clockwise) or unscrew the pump cover (4 screws). Pull out debris, spin the impeller by hand to confirm it moves freely, replace the cover.

How high can a Kenmore washer drain hose be installed?

Whirlpool’s spec for Kenmore 110-series washers is 8 inches minimum, 96 inches maximum above the floor. Below 8 inches and water can siphon out during the wash cycle (wash water drains while the washer is trying to wash, leaving you with under-water clothes). Above 96 inches and the drain pump can’t push water that high — water flows back into the tub faster than the pump clears it, F21 fires. Most basement laundry installations are well within range; high-mounted laundry rooms above garages occasionally exceed 96 inches.

Can I run my Kenmore washer with the F21 code showing?

Technically you can press Cancel and the washer will shut down without damage, but if you keep restarting cycles without fixing the underlying drain issue, the pump motor can burn out from continuous strain. What started as a $0 coin-in-the-impeller fix can become a $180 pump replacement. Treat F21 as “stop and clear the drain” rather than “press through and hope.”

Is the F21 code the same on Kenmore, Whirlpool, and Maytag washers?

Yes — for the Whirlpool family. Kenmore 110-series, Whirlpool Duet, and Whirlpool-built Maytag Maxima all use the same F21 fault definition: Long Drain Error. The fix is identical: clear the drain pump, check the hose, verify hose height. Kenmore 796 (LG-built) uses OE not F21; Kenmore 417 (Frigidaire-built) uses E20/E21. So “F21” is specifically the Whirlpool-family code.

How much does it cost to fix F21 on a Kenmore washer?

Depends on the cause. Clog or kink (causes #1-#4) is free — you fix it yourself in 15 to 30 minutes. Drain pump replacement (cause #5) is $120-$180 for the part plus 45 minutes of labour, typically $260-$340 all-in. Pressure switch replacement (cause #6) is $80-$140 for the part plus 30 minutes of labour, typically $200-$270 all-in. Our $89 service-call is waived if you approve the repair.

How long does it take to fix F21 myself?

For the most common cause (clogged drain pump on a Kenmore 110-series), expect 20 to 30 minutes from start to finish — including pulling the washer out, removing the front panel, clearing debris, and running a verification Drain & Spin cycle. Drain hose kinks and routing fixes are 5 to 10 minutes. The total time the washer is out of service is under an hour for owner-fixable causes.

When should I call a Kenmore washer repair technician for F21?

Call us when F21 returns after a thorough drain-system clean; when the drain pump doesn’t hum or run at all; when the pump runs but no water moves; when you can hear the pump straining and don’t want to force the front panel yourself; when the washer is leaking from the front or bottom; or when you’d rather not pull the washer apart and want a tech to do it in 45 minutes.
