10-minute DIY check (Duet front-loaders have an accessible filter; older top-loaders do not):
- Pop open the small access panel at the lower-front-right of a Duet. Place a shallow pan and towels — there’s standing water inside. Unscrew the filter knob slowly counter-clockwise to release water gradually.
- Pull the filter all the way out. Pick out lint, coins, bra wires, hair clips. A handful of debris is normal — a fistful means the filter hasn’t been cleaned in years.
- Pull the washer 6 inches from the wall. Look at the drain hose where it enters the standpipe — is it kinked, flattened, or jammed too deep (more than 4-5 inches into the standpipe causes siphon-block)?

Problem 4 — Whirlpool washer leaking from underneath

Problem 5 — Whirlpool washer making loud noise during spin

5-minute DIY check:
- Run a Spin Only cycle with the washer empty. Is the noise still there? If yes, it’s mechanical (bearings, rods, foreign object). If no, the noise was load-related (unbalanced clothes or trapped item in pockets).
- On Duets: check the drain pump filter for foreign objects.
- Push the top of the washer cabinet side-to-side. Excessive wobble = worn suspension rods.

Problem 6 — Whirlpool washer has a bad smell

15-minute DIY check (this one is mostly DIY-able):
- Run a Tub Clean cycle (or hottest available cycle) with 1 cup of bleach in the bleach dispenser, drum empty. Whirlpool calls this “Affresh” cycle on newer models. Run weekly for a month if the smell is severe.
- Pull out the detergent dispenser tray completely. Scrub with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush, paying attention to the rubber flapper underneath. Air-dry before reinstalling.
- On Duets: peel back the rubber door boot folds and wipe out residue with a 50/50 bleach-water mix and a cloth. Repeat weekly for 2-3 weeks.
- Leave the washer door cracked open between loads to let the drum air-dry.

Problem 8 — Whirlpool washer won’t agitate
Symptoms: the drum fills with water, the cycle runs, but the agitator (the post in the centre of traditional top-loaders) doesn’t move. Clothes come out essentially un-washed. Specific to traditional Whirlpool top-loaders with agitators — Cabrios and Duets use a different drive system and have different failure modes.
Most common cause: on Whirlpool traditional top-loaders (WTW4855, WTW5000, WTW5840), the drive coupling is the dominant cause (~50% of won’t-agitate calls). The agitator dogs — small plastic pieces inside the agitator that engage on the wash stroke — are the second most common (~30%) and are a cheap part. Motor or transmission failure is rare (~20%) but expensive.

- Listen during the wash cycle. Hear the motor running but no agitator movement? Drive coupling or agitator dogs.
- Hear nothing at all? Motor or control board.
- Push down firmly on the agitator and twist. Excessive looseness = worn agitator dogs.

Problem 9 — Whirlpool washer won’t fill (or fills very slowly)
Symptoms: cycle starts but water doesn’t enter the drum, or fills so slowly the cycle times out and throws an error. Could be cold-water-only filling, hot-water-only filling, or no fill at all.
Most common causes:
- Clogged inlet screens (~40%) — small mesh screens inside the fill hose connections trap sediment from hard water. The cheapest and most-overlooked fix on Whirlpool washers.
- Failed water inlet valve (~30%) — the electrically-operated valve that opens to admit water fails open or closed.

10-minute DIY check:
- Turn off both water supply valves at the wall.
- Unscrew the hot and cold fill hoses at the back of the washer (have a bucket — there’s water in the hoses).
- Look inside the inlet ports. There’s a small mesh screen inside each. Clean with a toothbrush or replace if torn. Sediment buildup is dramatic on hard-water homes in older Toronto neighbourhoods.
- Verify both wall shutoff valves are FULLY open — partial-open is a common cause of slow fill.
- Restart a cycle and check fill speed.

Problem 10 — Whirlpool washer “Lid” flashing / lid lock issues
Symptoms: the “Lid” light flashes constantly, the washer refuses to start with the lid closed, or the washer locks the lid mid-cycle and won’t release at the end. Specific to Cabrio HE top-loaders and traditional Whirlpool top-loaders with lid lock (most 2010+ models).
Most common cause: ~60% of the time the lid lock SWITCH itself has failed mechanically — the metal tab that pushes the switch is bent, or the switch’s internal contacts have worn out. ~25% is the lid hinge dummy strike (the plastic post that triggers the lock) is broken off the lid. ~15% is the control board misreading a working switch.
5-minute DIY check:
- Open the lid and look at the bottom edge — there’s a small plastic post called the strike. Is it intact, or broken off? A broken strike is a $30 part and a 15-minute DIY repair.
- With the lid open, look inside the cabinet at the rim where the lid closes. You’ll see a small switch or sensor. Push it gently with a finger. Does it click? If the click is mushy or missing, the switch is bad.
- Unplug for 60 seconds. About 15% of “Lid” flashing issues clear with a power cycle (board software glitch).

I was very pleased with their knowledgeable, friendly, professional, efficient, reasonable, and honest service. The water dispenser on my Samsung fridge wasn’t working well. From the initial phone inquiry, they were able to identify the likely issue. The technician was very friendly, quickly found the problem, completed the repair in under 30 minutes, and cleaned up everything before leaving. I would definitely call them again if needed.

Had a great experience dealing with Appliance Forever. They were acting on behalf of my extended warranty company when it came to my Kitchen Aid refrigerator. Very professional. Booked the appt. Confirmed. Called ahead. Showed up on time and diagnosed. Ordered part and came back with new IceMaker two weeks later and installed perfectly and Voila ! We have ice again. I recommend.
